Salivary Gland Disorders

Painful swelling with meals, dry mouth, or a lump in front of the ear or under the jaw — the salivary glands are ENT territory.

The parotid, submandibular and minor salivary glands can develop stones that block saliva flow (painful swelling that flares with eating), infections, inflammatory conditions, and benign or malignant tumors. Dr. Bortniker evaluates salivary complaints with examination, imaging and biopsy when needed, and brings head and neck surgical expertise to gland surgery when it is required.

Salivary Stones and Infections

Stones block the duct and cause swelling and pain that peak at mealtimes. Small stones often pass with hydration, massage and sour candies to stimulate flow; persistent stones and infections are treated with antibiotics and, when needed, procedures to remove the stone or, rarely, the gland.

Salivary Gland Tumors

Most salivary tumors — especially in the parotid gland — are benign, but they should be evaluated and usually removed, both for diagnosis and because some transform over time. Parotid surgery demands careful protection of the facial nerve, which runs through the gland — experience matters here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a painless lump near my ear urgent?

Not urgent, but not ignorable: painless, slowly growing parotid lumps are commonly benign tumors that still warrant imaging and a plan. Have it evaluated within a few weeks.
