Balloon Sinuplasty

A minimally invasive, in-office procedure that opens blocked sinus drainage pathways — no cutting, no tissue removal, and most patients back to normal in a day or two.

Chronic sinusitis often comes down to blocked drainage: the sinus openings are too narrow, so mucus builds and infections keep returning. Balloon sinuplasty places a small balloon into the natural sinus opening and gently inflates it, permanently widening the pathway. Dr. Bortniker was an innovator in bringing this procedure to the office setting in the Somerville community, performing it under local anesthesia without general anesthesia.

How the Procedure Works

After numbing the nose, a thin guide is placed into the blocked sinus opening under endoscopic view. The small balloon is inflated for a few seconds, gently restructuring the opening, then removed. Nothing is cut away, and the widened pathway stays open — restoring the sinus’s natural drainage.

Recovery and Results

Because there are no incisions, recovery is fast: most patients return to normal activities within 24 to 48 hours, with mild pressure or congestion for a few days. Studies show durable, long-term symptom improvement for well-selected patients.

Balloon Sinuplasty vs. Traditional Sinus Surgery

Balloon sinuplasty suits blocked drainage pathways without extensive disease. When polyps or widespread diseased tissue are present, endoscopic sinus surgery is the better tool. The endoscopic exam and CT scan determine which is right for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it hurt?

Patients typically feel pressure rather than pain during the brief inflation. The office procedure is done under local anesthesia, and you drive home the same day — many patients return to work the next morning.
